Book Journey

I haven't taken part in the Book Journey for a long time. I saw a post by a friend this morning so thought I would head back over there and find some inspiration. I was drawn to the Call The Midwife book by Jennifer Worth after seeing the advert on TV for the series. I read it more or less alongside watching the TV series as I had to order it into the library which at the time was being relocated so took a while to arrive. Anyway it is one of those can't put down sort of books but when I finished it before the series ended I realised some of the stories that had been televised weren't actually in the book. I checked out the author and there is actually more than one book which explains the extra stories so I ordered the next one which is the book I am currently engrossed in - Shadows Of The Workhouse

The stories are based in the East End of London in the 1950s.  Jennifer Worth wrote them from her own experiences and the recounts of her patients.  Obviously over time those memories may not be totally accurate but I've read enough to want to look further into that time period. 

The tenements people lived in sound horrendous.  I can only imagine them to be like the high rise flats we are used to seeing in densely populated areas in modern day life but without sanitary facilities.  Families in those days had lots of children so there were as many as ten or more people living in one room. Unthinkable now but the norm then.

Reading and Thoughts

I haven't taken part in the Book Journey Monday meme for a while. 

Currently I am reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett


I am part way into it and loving it so far. It is definitely an eyeopener into how in the not so distant past servants were treated.












Something else I found is the Simple Womans Daybook where we fill in the blanks with our personal thoughts




Outside my window... it is a mixture of clouds, blue sky and sunshine



I am thinking... about lunch



I am thankful... for the noisy neighbours being quiet last night



In the kitchen... it resembles a dumping ground and is desperately in need of a declutter



I am wearing... jeans and a shirt



I am creating... some knitting in a little while for the sock journey on Ravelry and a layout for the punky scraps challenge this friday.



I am going... nowhere really this week apart from the school run and a few bits and bobs



I am wondering... if the above will change as it usually does where kids are concerned.



I am reading... see above - The Help by Kathryn Stockett



I am hoping... that aforementioned noisy neighbours will be quiet for two nights in a row



I am looking forward to... getting the knitting out of the way for the sock journey and then I can create my own stuff



I am hearing... the TV and my daughter in the kitchen making her lunch,



Around the house... is too much clutter



I am pondering... doing something about that clutter but only pondering and not actually doing which isn't a good thing :(



One of my favorite things... at the moment is a love of crochet. I've only been doing it a few months but am loving it



A few plans for the rest of the week: maybe decluttering, maybe making a start on decorating but shhhh because I didn't really say that

Book Journey - 14th March 2011

I started Angelas Ashes by Frank McCourt last week and I must say it is a compelling read.  It is his recount of his childhood starting in America and ending up back in his parents homeland of Ireland.  Covering the awful conditions he lived in and the tragedies affecting his family.  It is a can't put down read.  I'm about half way through at the moment and hopefully will be finished by next week.

I am still reading Idiot Abroad

I'm almost done with it though.

Next up is a book I have heard mentioned so many times but never read.  There was a second hand book fair at my son's school last week and it was on sale so I snapped it up. Angelas Ashes



I have no idea what it is about as the version I bought doesn't really have a synopsis but have an idea that it might be a bit of a tearjerker.

This week I am reading this

An Idiot Abroad - the book of the UK TV series.  It follows the journey made by Karl Pilkington to see the seven wonders of the world.  He was kind of dared by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant to do the journey.  It is one of the funniest TV shows I saw last year and the book is very funny too.  If you 'get' british humour then I would highly recommend it.

The Book Journey

This monday I am reading Around The World In 80 Days by Jules Verne.

Not my usual sort of read at all but I am definitely broadening my horizons this year when books are linked to knitting. This knit a long is the reason for this book and I'm so glad I stumbled across it as the book is fantastic.

I've borrowed the picture from the knit a long because my book cover is very boring and looks like this.

Monday Reading - Book Journey

I've just discovered the Book Journey thanks to Jo.

This monday I am reading one of the books from the Victorian Knitters Club over at Woolgirl.  The read for the first one is Sherlock Holmes - The Sign Of The Four.  The kits are based around the novel so I'm imagining greens and browns like his tweed suit or maybe rich jewels as the book is about treasure. It is due to make its way across the atlantic starting from today so I'm willing it to have a quick trip and fingers crossed it will be with me in a week or so.

I did actually cheat a little bit with the version I have which is from Amazon as above.  I started the sign of the four first but it is the second story in the book so I will have to backtrack once I have finished it and read A Study In Scarlet.
